Video Rewind: Opal Lee’s Juneteenth Campaign

When President Joseph Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday last week, Opal Lee was by his side. 

The 94-year-old civil rights leader from Fort Worth, TX, has led the campaign to establish the holiday, famously walking from her home to Washington, DC, in 2016. 

Last summer, her efforts brought her through Loudoun and she spoke to a crowd of locals at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Waterford.
