Chick-fil-A Endorsed, CVS Coming Back

The Planning Commission has given the thumbs up to an application that could bring Leesburg its second Chick-fil-A restaurant.

The commission voted 5-0-2, with commissioners Ad Barnes and David Faliskie absent, to recommend approval of a proffer and concept plan amendment and special exceptions to permit construction of two drive-through restaurants at the intersection of Miller Drive and Battlefield Parkway in the Oaklawn neighborhood. One of the restaurants will be a Chick-fil-A, while the other drive-through establishment is not yet known.

The application now heads to the Town Council for final review on Jan. 8.

The other item on the commission’s docket Dec. 6 was to modify a prior approval to accommodate a CVS Pharmacy with a drive-through, in addition to more than 14,000 square feet of other retail and restaurant uses, on vacant land near the intersection of Greenway Drive and Rt. 15. That application will come back to the commission for further discussion at the commission’s Dec. 20 meeting.

The recommendation of Town Staff in their report to the Planning Commission was to NOT approve the CVS application, as the intensity of usage (i.e. how busy it will be) is considerably more than the 2012 plans that were already approved.

There are already 5 other pharmacies less than 1.5 miles from that location; 7 of them within 2 miles! Why do we need an 8th pharmacy in the span of 2 miles, at more than double the amount of square footage that was approved for a bank (operating on bank hours, much friendlier to the neighborhood up against this plot, including the day care center and school). And the “14,000 square feet of other retail and restaurant uses” is in lieu of mixed use office and retail and a sit-down restaurant (vs. the fast food proposed in this application). Fast food is going to bring far more traffic, particularly concerning when the entrance is a shared road with the day care center less than 40 yards away.

This isn’t a good fit. Stop approving these rezoning applications and ask yourself: “Is this a good fit for Leesburg? Does this fill a NEED?”

Politicians NEED campaign funding so yes, approving these plans fills an important NEED. is it good for Leesburg? of course not.

Try as I may, I just don’t get the fascination with Chik-a-fila…the chicken is okay, but the menu is small…I probably have gone 2 or 3 times and look around wondering why these people think this is so great…I don’t and won’t return..much ado about nothing.
